The Numerical Discourses of the Buddha – a translation of the Anguttara Nikaya by Bhikkhu Bodhi

The present work offers a complete translation of theAṅguttara Nikāya, the fourth major collection in theSutta Piṭaka, or “Basket of Discourses,” belonging to thePāli Canon. An English translation of the AṅguttaraNikāya published by the Pali Text Society has long beenin print under the title The Book of the Gradual Sayings. Itwas issued in five volumes, I, II, and V translated by F. L.Woodward, and III and IV by E. M. Hare. First publishedbetween 1932 and 1936, this translation is now dated bothin style and technical terminology, and thus a freshEnglish rendering of the entire work has long been apressing need. In the late 1990s I collected NyanaponikaThera’s four-part series of Wheel booklets, An AṅguttaraNikāya Anthology, into a single volume for theInternational Sacred Literature Trust. I added sixtysuttas to the original anthology, and the resultingvolume was published as Numerical Discourses of theBuddha: An Anthology of Suttas from the Aṅguttara Nikāya(Walnut Creek, CA: AltaMira Press 1999). Thiscompilation, with a total of 208 suttas, containedperhaps an eighth of the full Aṅguttara Nikāya.Translations of many individual Aṅguttara suttas havealso been available over the internet, but a selection, however valuable, cannot do service for a translation ofthe complete work.
